The Very Rich Hours

Good Catholic girl and teacher's pet from Providence, R.I.; an innocent at Harvard, where the rule is to know everything before arriving; perennial outsider to any sense of well-being; Miss Anne M. Kane is an American provincial trying to fit her anomalous self to a set of very particular, very rich hours.

In *The Very Rich Hours* Jean McGarry traces the course of Anne's education in the 1970s, as she threads her way past clothes-horses and man-eaters, student princes and self-proclaimed geniuses, artists, professors, and confidence men.

As one stage of Anne's education has been completed and another is about to begin, McGarry moves backward and forward in. time.  In the spaces between episodes are illuminated moments, prose poems whose striking perspectives and rich colors comment on the narrative like the brilliant miniatures in a medieval book of hours.
